Laohu Valley Reserve (LVR) is the largest protected area in the Free State Province of South Africa. This privately owned reserve of approximately 350km2 spans the Gariep (Orange) River in the upper reaches of the Vanderkloof Dam. Although most of the Reserve lies in the Free State Province, an area of about 118km2 extends into the Northern Cape Province.
Laohu Valley Reserve serves as a platform for the world’s most ambitious tiger rewilding and reintroduction project in a last-ditch effort to save the South China Tiger from extinction. The founders of Save China’s Tigers have a real passion for wildlife in general and they are dedicated to the restoration and conservation of the Reserve’s biodiversity.
“Laohu” is the endearing term for the tiger in Chinese. “Laohu Valley” is named to commemorate the contribution this project has made to conserving South African wildlife and biodiversity.
You can follow updates on the greater conservation project by visiting the Reserve Diaries and the Tigers’ rewilding progress by visiting the Save China’s Tigers site.
